#25 – Faith Like Potatoes
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This movie is based upon a true story. Angus transforms his life from being selfish and prideful to a humble, giving person. I recommend watching the bonus features because you get to see the real Angus Buchan. There is a tragic accident that parents should be aware; younger children may be sensitive to it. This is an inspiring and upliftful movie!
Summary – A farmer moves his family to South Africa and suffers a series of seemingly insurmountable losses. Through unlikely friendships and much needed divine intervention, he discovers his life’s true purpose and it sustains his unwavering belief in the power of faith. A moving life journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.
#24 – Unconditional
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This movie has quite a few twists and turns and side stories, but the purpose of the movie is to show that we can forgive and love others unconditionally despite sometimes horrific circumstances. It is a good overall story!
Summary – A woman’s idyllic life is shattered when her husband is killed in a senseless act of violence. As she prepares to take matters into her own hands, two unexpected encounters begin to change everything.
#23 – Though None Go With Me
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This movie has a good message about persevering when life gets rough and starts to fall apart. I was pleased with the ending because it seemed like real life instead of a fairy tale, which is good to watch every once in a while. I would recommend this to all age groups because there is no sex, violence, or swearing (definitely a plus) and the storyline is engaging!
Summary – It’s 1951 and America is caught in the Korean War, but a world away in Three Rivers, Elizabeth Leroy (Amy Grabow, General Hospital) is caught in her own personal struggle. She longs to escape her small town life and set out in pursuit of a career but a twist of fate and the promise of true love forces her to stay. She meets the town’s new handsome and devout minister with whom she quickly falls in love and plans to marry but when he leaves for Korea to do God’s work, she is heartbroken. The events that follow alter Elizabeth’s life forever and truly test not only her faith and inner strength but her resilience as well.
#22 – 17 Miracles
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is the best movie about the Mormon pioneers that I have seen! The acting was well done and the experiences shown in the movie were based on true events. I felt for the individual families that had to bury their loved ones and continue on their journey west. There were deep emotions throughout the entire movie so beware that you may cry a lot! I recommend this movie to everybody!
Summary – As part of the Willie Handcart Company, Levi Savage (Jasen Wade) feared that leaving late in the season would lead to despair and death. What he learned was that for every tragedy, there was a multitude of miracles. Brought to you by filmmaker T. C. Christensen (Praise to the Man; The Work and the Glory), 17 Miracles will open your eyes to the unbelievable but true stories of the Mormon pioneers as you have never seen them before.
#21 – Soul Surfer
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is an excellent family-friendly movie that has a very touching and inspiring story. The cast was great, especially AnnaSophia Robb who plays Bethany Hamilton. The directors did a good job at portraying what really happened to Bethany. I was pleased to see them incorporate her religious beliefs, because it was something that helped her through her trial. The surfing scenes were well done and enjoyable to watch. There is one scene that could be scary for younger children (when Bethany is attacked by the shark). To me, the overall message of the film is that even though bad things may happen, they can make us stronger and be a good thing in the end.
Summary – Soul Surfer is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith. In the wake of this life-changing event that took her arm and nearly her life, Bethany’s feisty determination and steadfast beliefs spur her toward an adventurous comeback that gives her the grit to turn her loss into a gift for others.
#20 – The Frontier Boys
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This movie is quite intense and has quite a bit of voilence and action through out the movie. This movie brings you through the journey of the four high school basketball stars and shows struggles and triumphs. This movie is a little more intense than I thought it would be, for that I didn’t like it as much as I thought.
Summary – The story of four high school boys whose undefeated basketball season and friendship are threatened after a drive-by shooting leaves one of them in a coma and one of them with a secret. Brent Fencett, Jed Bracken, and T.J. Lewis are star players on the Charlevoix High School Basketball team; Jackson Carlson is their most obnoxious fan. They are unbeaten on the court and inseparable off it – until Brent gets caught up in his older brother’s mixed up life. The consequences of Brent’s choice leave T.J. in the hospital, and Brent’s soul in turmoil.
#19 – Amish Grace
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This was an excellent movie about forgiveness. The movie focuses on two mothers, the widow of the gunman and the mother of one of the girls. It was interesting to see how they both developed throughout the movie and how they were each able to forgive. This film is a great reminder to all that forgiveness is possible even in the worst circumstances!
Summary – When a tragedy takes the lives of five Amish schoolgirls in Pennsylvania, Ida (Williams-Paisley), the mother of one of the girls, faces a profound test of faith. As she begins to feel like an outsider within her own community, Ida must decide whether or not to stay with the Amish – and her beloved husband (Matt Letscher). Delicately crafted and featuring poignant performances, this film, based on a true story, is a moving testament to the power of forgiveness.
#18 – The Blind Side
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – I loved this movie! It is based on the true story of Michael Oher and how he became a NFL football player due to Anne Tuohy and her family taking him off the street and changing his life. It was also good to see the positive impact and change Michael had on the Tuohy family. This movie has some football in it but is not the main focus, which may appeal to a bigger audience. The cast was great; Sandra Bullock did an incredible job of portraying Anne Tuohy and received an Oscar for her performance. This is a good movie for the whole family!
Summary – Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) knows little about family. Less about football. What the homeless teen knows are the streets and projects of Memphis. Well-to-do Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) knows little about his world. Yet when she and Michael meet, he’s found a home. And the Tuohys have found something just as life-changing: a beloved new son and brother. This real-life story of family and of Michael’s growth into a blue-chip football star will have you cheering with its mix of gridiron action and heartwarming emotion.
#17 – Meant to Be
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – It turns out that this movie is actually quite controversial because the main theme is that abortion is wrong and should be avoided at all costs. Nevertheless, the movie teaches well that we can choose our actions, but we cannot choose the consequences of those actions.
Summary – Meant To Be is about a 20-year old named Nathan (Bradley Dorsey) who loses his career & his girlfriend and begins to question his purpose in life. Compounding his struggle, he grew up in a foster home & never met his birth mother. Nathan sets out to find his mother & come to terms with her rejection. His journey begins by flying to the city where he was born & upon his arrival, checks into a hotel & meets Mave (Della Reese) the hotel’s housekeeper. Encouraged by her wisdom & the help of hotel guest (Kristen Renton) he finds his mothers address, Linda Dixon (Erika Eleniak). Linda agonizes over the decision she made with Nathan 20 years ago. In an effort to admonish the guilt of giving up her son, Linda is caught up in the life of a teenage mother, Tori (Erin Sossoman) who is conflicted by the decision to abort her baby. When Nathan gathers the courage to meet his mother, he uncovers a terrible secret that totally redefines what was meant to be for his life.
#16 – The Encounter
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This movie addresses many of the main concerns that those not of Christian beliefs frequently raise. The waiter of a small diner acts as Jesus Christ and changes the lives of a few people who are stranded there because of a storm. If you need a reminder as to why you believe in and have faith in Christ, this movie will definitely do that!
Summary – Stranded in the middle of nowhere, five strangers find themselves marooned in a deserted roadside diner. An arrogant businessman, (Steve “Sting” Borden), a lonely single woman, (Jaci Velasquez), a couple on the verge of divorce, and a youthful runaway all come face to face with a diner owner who serves them more than temporal nourishment. This genial host is a certain Nazarene, (Bruce Marchiano) who knows all of their secrets and possesses the answers to all of their problems if only they would trust him. It is a miraculous Encounter that will leave them all changed.
#15 – Love’s Unfolding Dream
Grade: B
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is a cute film from the Love Comes Softly series. There is a lot of determination and dedication shown by the main characters and not to mention some fun romance to go along with it. It is fun to watch the story unfold as you wonder what will happen next.
Summary – Missie’s (Erin Cottrell) adopted daughter Belinda (Scout Taylor-Compton) is determined to become a doctor, but despite her dedication and ability, Doc Jackson (Robert Pine) believes women should stay at home – and so does Belinda’s suitor, Drew Simpson (Patrick Levis)! But with faith and hard work, Belinda begins winning the hearts and minds of everyone around her, including a wealthy dowager (Nancy Linehan Charles), who just might help make Belinda’s dreams come true in this satisfying family drama that also stars Samantha Smith and Dale Midkiff.
#14 – The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is a very inspiring movie to motivate to be good people and do what is right. This movie has an excellent example of how we should reach out to others and try to make a difference in the world because you never know when you will touch someone’s life for good or bad.
Summary – Best buddies Dustin, Albert and Mark are twelve year old boys looking forward to a summer of fun in 1970. When Dustin mows the lawn of seventy-five year old Jonathan Sperry, a man he has seen at church, a unique friendship develops. What happens the rest of this summer is something Dustin and his friends will never forget.
#13 – Flywheel
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – I love the focus of this movie, “Every man has a turning point in their life”. Jay is able to make a complete 360 degrees in his life and fix everything he was doing that was wrong and thought that it would ruin his life but then his life became more than he could have ever hoped! I love the message from this movie!
Summary – Jay Austin wants to sell used cars in the worst way… and that’s exactly how he does business at his dealership. Promising much more than he can ever deliver, he’ll do anything whatever it takes to sell a car. His manipulative ways permeate all of his relationships – even his wife and son know they cant trust him. But as Jay works on restoring a classic convertible, he begins to see that God is working to restore him as well. Coming face to face with the reality of how he truly conducts himself, Jay Austin begins the ride of his life as he learns to honor God with his business, his relationships, and his life!
#12 – The Mission
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – I have not seen this film, it doesn’t seem like my style of movie. It seems a little bit strange for my taste. But I know some people who enjoy this older film.
Summary – The Mission is a powerful action epic about a man of the sword (Robert DeNiro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th century colonial empires.
#11 – The Christmas Shoes
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is a really touching story and is very sweet. If you don’t like to cry in movies this is probably not the best choice. The little boy is so sweet and touches the lives of those around him including the guy who ultimately helps him.
Summary – After 10-year-old Nathan Andrews learns that this will be his mother’s (Kimberly Williams, Father of the Bride) last Christmas, he decides to buy her a special gift. As Nathan sets out on his quest, fate puts him in the path of Robert Layton (Golden Globe Nominee Rob Lowe, “The West Wing”), an overworked attorney who has forgotten to take time for his family. It’s the boy’s love for his mother that inspires Robert to reconnect with what’s truly important in his life.
#10 – The Best Two Years
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – If you know and understand Mormon humor, this is the movie for you, especially if you served a full-time mission! This is a comical approach inside the lives of four Mormon missionaries, and although not completely accurate, this movie is sure to keep you laughing throughout. Great Mormon movie!
Summary – The Best Two Years is the funny and touching story of Elder Rogers (KC Clyde), a Mormon missionary struggling with his faith after a series of blows to his personal life. When he is called to train Elder Calhoun (Kirby Heyborne), an overzealous new missionary, Rogers must reconcile his beliefs and sense of purpose.

#9 – The Letter Writer
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – The main theme of this film is that “what goes around, comes around.” If we give to others, we will receive in return. This movie is touching and is great for family members of all ages!
Summary – When Maggy Fuller, a rebellious and troubled teenager, receives an old fashioned letter in the mail from an unknown source, she can’t imagine who could have so many wonderful things to say about her. After all, she is all but invisible to her father and a disappointment to her mom. So she tracks down the mysterious author of the letter and uncovers someone she has never met… but someone who seems to know her better than anyone else in her life.
#8 – Love’s Long Journey
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – Another wonderful part of the Love Comes Softly series. It is fun to see Missie and her husband embark in new journeys. This series is very wholesome and good.
Summary – In this compelling third installment from Janette Oke’s Love Comes Softly book series, Missie’s (Erin Cottrell) surprise discovery – her pregnancy – sets her on a new course that’s at once thrilling and terrifying. After all the planning and dreaming, she and her husband, Willie (Logan Bartholomew), have headed west in a covered wagon, leaving behind the prairie home of Missie’s parents. Now, caught between the excitement of the new adventure and the pain of not knowing when she’ll see her family again, Missie copes with the challenges, and cherishes the rewards, of her new homestead.
#7 – Love’s Enduring Promise
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is a movie that shows faith and wisdom. It is a heart warming film that everyone in the family can watch and enjoy together. You don’t have to worry about the content being dirty at all. You will fall in love with this series if you give it a try.
Summary – Based on Janette Oke’s best-selling novel, this poignant sequel to Love Comes Softly will draw you in from beginning to end. Missie Davis (January Jones) is devoted equally to teaching school and doing her fair share on the farm. When a handsome railroad heir (Mackenzie Astin) starts to woo her, Missie is nearly swept off her feet. That is, until a mysterious stranger (Logan Bartholomew) with a troubled past shows up. Torn between two very different men, Missie learns what is truly important in this inspiring film that the whole family will enjoy.
#6 – Flag of My Father
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – A touching story about a father who is in the military and sacrfices his life for the good of the country. This is a wonderful and inspiring story.
Summary – Serving her country is an honour for Judith (GiGi Erneta: Friday NIght Lights, Vernonica Mars), an army nurse whose Vietnam veteran father (William Devane: Knots Landing, 24) taught her the importance of sacrifice. After a tour in Iraq, she returns home and combats severe post-traumatic stress in the form of nightmares. She and her father share a loving bond strengthened by military camaraderie. #5 –Gifted Hands
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – It was inspiring to watch Ben Carson evolve over his life and to see how he became one of the top neurosurgeons in the world. He defeats all odds and shows us that we can become anything we want to be if we have the right attitude and have the desire to change. Ben definitely could not have been as successful without his mother (some of my favorite scenes were ones he shared with his mother). It was inspiring to see his single mother give everything she had to him and teach him the importance of education and believing in yourself. This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over and still enjoy it every time!
Summary – Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Actor in a Supporting Role, Jerry Maguire, 1996) stars in this true story about a renowned brain surgeon who overcame obstacles to change the course of medicine forever. Young Ben Carson didn’t have much of a chance. Growing up in a broken home amongst poverty and prejudice, his grades suffered and his temper flared. And yet, his mother never lost her faith in him. Insisting he follow the opportunities she never had, she helped to grow his imagination, intelligence and, most importantly, his belief in himself. That faith would be his gift – the thing that would drive him to follow his dream of becoming one of the world’s leading neurosurgeons.
#4 –The Ten Commandments
Grade: B+
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This a classic that everyone should see at least once. It is kind of long but still quite epic. It is a good movie to share with the family every once while with your family on a Sunday night.
Summary – The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharaoh’s daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians.

As the months pass, though, Marty and Clark discover an unexpected new love where there was once only loss.
#2 – Hachi: A Dog’s Tale
Grade: A-
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – I love this movie even though I am not a dog lover. It is a true story about a love and loyalty with his master. It is nice, clean and a very well done movie. There is not a lot of conversation but it is still very enjoyable!
Summary – Golden Globe winner Richard Gere (2002, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Chicago) stars as Professor Parker Wilson, a distinguished scholar who discovers a lost Akita puppy on his way home from work. Despite initial objections from Wilson’s wife, Cate (Academy Award nominee Joan Allen – 2000, Best Actress, The Contender), Hachi endears himself into the Wilson family and grows to be Parker’s loyal companion. As their bond grows deeper, a beautiful relationship unfolds embodying the true spirit of family and loyalty, while inspiring the hearts of an entire town.
#1 – Stand Strong
Grade: A-
Mommy Bear’s Family Movie Review – This is a great story of a family who depends so heavily on material goods and has to rely on the Lord to get back on their feet when they lose everything. Will they be able to stand strong? It helps put life into perspective and shows what truly matters the most in life. Excellent film for the whole family.
