Organized Media = Happy Families

Life

Ideas of how to organize all your DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs, etc.If your household is like many, you have a lot of family friendly dvds and video games laying here and there. Kids can learn, at a very young age, that the movies they are watching need to be returned to their cases after each use. Let’s face it- it is never any fun to place a family friendly dvd in the player to find that it is permanently scratched. Now is the time to show your kids how to organize and take care of the media in your home.

Find a shelf or basket that is nearby the movie viewing area(s) in your home. If your kids are younger it is important for adults to model the proper way to store these dvds. Kids watch every move that the adults in their lives make. So, this means, it is of the utmost importance to remove the dvd from the player as soon as it ends. Be sure to leave the proper case nearby, so the dvd can be placed in the correct case upon removal. Then place the dvd on a shelf, or in a basket nearby. Video games should also be taken care of in the same fashion. Once your kids are old enough to do this on their own, let them have a go of it!

Now, let’s take this one step further. Alphabetizing your movies and video games is a fantastic learning opportunity! The beauty of keeping them alphabetized is, it gives your whole family the total picture of what your family library of movies and video games includes. Here are a number of ways you can organize your media!

Now that you have some new ideas on organizing media, take the time to show your kids how to organize their media. Once kids get into the habit of taking care of their media, parents can be relieved that their favorite movies and video games will be around for a while. This should help eliminate the problems of scratched dvds, lost dvds, misplaced dvds, and knowing which movies and video games your family owns.

We store our dvd's out of their cases in plastic sleeves and put in a photo box in alphabetical order. It doesn't take up much space and like you say, the alphabetic order helps keep them in their places,

Great ideal, wish I could teach my 37 yr old how to return things. When he was 10..no problem, now, he's too big.

So true, I need to get mine organized. One of my daughter's favorite things to do was take all of the dvd's out of the stand and then try to put them back in – it never went well 🙂

Thanks great idea. I don't have kids but my nieces and nephews are over so much they pretty much live with me. The younger ones love to help me organize my DVD's alphabetically. The older ones are the ones I have trouble having them put away movie after they watch.

Great idea – this is exactly me! Our media is alphabetized and I have a complete list of what we own on my own so that when I go to buy something new I don't buy a duplicate.
